Dear ____________________:

As a constituent, I am writing to ask you to serve as an Honorary Sponsor of The National Anthem Project ~ Restoring America’s Voice.

In response to surveys showing that nearly two-thirds of Americans do not know the words to the National Anthem, MENC: The National Association for Music Education has launched The National Anthem Project to promote the significance of “The Star Spangled Banner,” renew national awareness of America’s musical heritage, and re-teach America to sing the National Anthem through a multi-year national education campaign.

The project began on March 10, 2005 in Washington, D.C., and has included a 50-cities tour of major singing celebrations throughout the country -- at schools, professional sporting events and other community venues. The launch was a great success with coverage by Fox News, CNN, Good Morning America, over 285 local television stations, and news articles from all across the country.

This program to get America singing will culminate with a record-setting performance of the National Anthem in Washington, D.C. on Flag Day, June 14, 2007. Bands, choirs and orchestras representing every state in the nation will make history as the largest school music ensemble ever assembled in one location. Produced by the American Musical Salute, these performing groups will provide a thirty minute concert scheduled at one of ten of Washington DC's notable venues including memorials, monuments, museums, and historic sites. This historic occasion will remind our nation of the importance of Restoring America's Voice through supporting youth music in our schools.

A finale event is also being planned with Drum Corps International (DCI) at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland on Saturday, June 16, 2007.

We are pleased that First Lady Laura Bush has served as the Honorary Chair of this non-partisan project. Other partners in this project include:
  • The American Legion
  • Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.
  • The History Channel
  • The Mormon Tabernacle Choir
  • Country Music Association

You are eligible to become an Honorary Sponsor of the National Anthem Project. There are no time or monetary commitments to the project required for becoming a sponsor, only your support of this effort to invigorate and re-teach America about the National Anthem. Possible participation ideas include: sing the Anthem at public meetings, write a resolution or proclamation, add us to your web site, and of course, if possible, attend any of the planned finale events in Washington, D.C. from June 14-16.

Should you have any questions or concerns or wish to become an Honorary Sponsor, please contact Stephanie Jones at MENC at 703-860-4000 x 323 or StephanieJ@menc.org.

    Sincerely,
