Dear Mr./Ms.:

Americans don’t know their national anthem as well as they think they do!

A 2004 Harris Poll revealed that two out of three Americans don’t know the words to “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Nearly forty percent couldn’t give its correct title. However, of those who did know our national anthem, more than 70 percent learned it in their school music classes.

My colleagues and I see that as a challenge. We are leading the students of this community in promoting teaching and singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” through The National Anthem Project: Restoring America’s Voice, a campaign spearheaded by MENC: The National Association for Music Education. To help in this effort, we propose a joint effort between teachers and (newpaper/radio station/TV station) to promote this campaign within our community. We teachers can provide news and information about our education activities that you and your reporters can use or adapt for articles, interviews, calendar notes, and similar purposes.

In addition, perhaps you’d be interested in conducting an informal local survey to see where our community stands on knowledge of the national anthem. Are our scores similar, better, or worse than the national Harris Poll? Regardless, we’d like to work with you over the next couple of years to go for 100% knowledge, not just by our students, but by everyone in our community. At that point, we invite you to re-poll the community.

Would you be interested in working with us to make “The Star-Spangled Banner” a reality in everyone’s lives? I’ll contact you next week to find out, and I’m looking forward to talking with you. Feel free to contact me at the (number/email) below also. Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,
