How to Have a Proclamation Made on Behalf of
The National Anthem Project and Music Educators
in Your City, County, or State

Adapted from The Kid’s Guide to Service Projects by Barbara A. Lewis (Free Spirit Publishing, 1995)

A proclamation is a fancy way to make a public announcement. Governors, mayors, council members, or local government administrators make proclamations to commend people or to announce upcoming events. Here’s how to make one happen for the National Anthem Project:

1. Contact the official’s office to request the proclamation.

2. Send a letter stating what you would like the proclamation to say and offering a copy of the proclamation MENC has provided.

3. Make an appointment to meet with the official for the signing of the proclamation. Usually you can take a photograph of him or her signing the proclamation. You can use the photograph to advertise your project, if you get permission first.

4. When you hear that the official is willing to sign the proclamation, contact the editor of your local paper to let him or her know when and where the event will occur.
